My husband and I went to one of the biggest events in San Diego which is Opening Day in Del Mar last week and I had the the time of my life. It was such an incredible experience and it was everything I imagined and more. I've been wanting to go since I was a kid to see the glamorous women dressed to the nines in their gorgeous and sexy cocktail dresses and their fancy hats and the men dressed up in suits to watch the first day of horse racing. I was very fortunate to be invited by Del Mar Racing to attend this special event and was given special media pass which allowed my husband and I to experience behind the scenes of Opening Day and be on the race track to see the horses up close and personal.

Opening Day is similar to the Kentucky Derby in which people come together and watch horse racing and place bets on their favorite horses. Opening Day is also one of the biggest day for fashion and draws the most crowd because it's not only about horses but about seeing the fashionable ladies dressed up in their most glamorous clothes. Since I love fashion, this event was definitely on my bucket list to do. I love dressing up and I'm all about hats. I got my gorgeous blue fascinator courtesy of Hattitude which sells the cutest hats for everyday look and special hats for Opening Day. You can read more about Hattitude on this blog post. Yes, this event is that big. Opening Day is all about the hat and dress to impress. Since we were going to be there all day, I wanted something comfortable, chic and sexy. I found this gorgeous blue fitted dress from Nordstrom and it definitely had all the bell and whistles. I paired it with my favorite black Gucci belt and my comfortable black heels from Steve Madden. 

One of my favorite experience about Opening Day is being at the Turf Club. The Turf Club is a members only club and has a specific business casual dress code. I love being able to sit down and enjoy lunch while watching the horses.  It is also in a shaded area which makes it more comfortable to watch the races because it was one of the hottest and humid day. I also love that it is super convenient to place your bets and easily accessible to the restroom. We decided to arrive early so that we can avoid the traffic. I also recommend valeting the car since it is very far to walk from the car to the venue.  My husband and I enjoyed hanging with the jockeys at horse owner at the paddock which is a very special experience since not everyone is allowed at the paddock. I was also able to capture a picture with one of them. 

I highly recommend going to Opening Day whether you live in San Diego or plan to visit. It is a must see event where the most fashionable ladies are dressed up and the most glamorous and unique hats are seen. 

Since it was my first time, I wanted to bet on a few horse races. Since I know don't know squat about horse racing, I picked and chose the horses based on their names. Unfortunately, all the horses I picked didn't win. My husband however won three races. Chicka Chicka Boom was one of the winners and it is pretty ironic because we just read the book to my son the night before. So we had to bet on that horse and he won enough to pay our babysitter which is a win in my book. If you are there and Chicka Chicka Boom is racing, I would definitely place bet on that horse.
